AKTUN CHEN KU TURISMO INDÍGENA
SAN AGUSTÍN
Turismo Indígena San Agustín is an ejido considered a successful model of sustainable forest use that, thanks to community participation, implements various actions for the conservation of the natural resources of the Puuc Biocultural State Reserve.
Upon noticing the interest of academics, researchers and government authorities in visiting the site, the Aktun Chen Ku cooperative decided to start a tourism venture. The objective is to promote the conservation of their natural resources and share their culture with anyone interested in learning about the lifestyle of the inhabitants of this community.
Located in the heart of the Puuc Biocultural State Reserve in southern Yucatan, the Aktun Chen Ku cooperative offers the opportunity to disconnect from the chaos of the city and enjoy the tranquility of the town. You will learn about the main economic activities of the local population, such as sustainable charcoal and wooden furniture production, embroidery of clothing, and the cultivation of vegetables and medicinal plants in an agroforestry plot.
For adventure lovers, the cooperative offers bicycle tours on a 9 km trail through the jungle, where it is possible to admire the vegetation of the area and visit the local apiaries until reaching the Aktun Chen Ku cavern. In addition, the cooperative offers typical Yucatecan dishes made from local crops and has a camping area for sleeping outdoors.
